Né en juin 1953 à Fuping dans la province du Shaanxi, Xi Jinping est issu de l'ethnie Han.

Il a commencé à travailler en janvier 1969 et a rejoint le Parti communiste chinois (PCC) en janvier 1974.

Diplômé de la faculté des Sciences humaines et sociales de l'Université Tsinghua, il s'est spécialisé en théorie marxiste et en éducation idéologique et politique dans le cadre d'une formation continue de troisième cycle. Il est titulaire d'un doctorat en droit.
